Here is a prime example of how sensitive working with Listed buildings can be. If you want to alter anything on a listed building or demolish or add anything which is considered to be within the Curtilage of that building, then you need consent, and whatever you do should not be detrimental to the existing character or setting of that structure.
This is an application for a garden shed, that is to sit in front of a Grade II* Listed building, which is highly protected. Therefore, any applications for alteration are being considered not just by the Local Conservation officer, but also by Historic England. You might say, ‘well it’s only temporary, it will probably be gone in another 30 years’, but the addition of this structure will affect the setting of the listed building and the enjoyment of that for the next 30 years which is unacceptable.
We have worked on a series of listed buildings over the years, and if you want to enjoy the character and history of the property, and become one of the many ‘caretakers’ who will look after it throughout its life, then feel free to embrace the opportunity but don’t expect to make alterations inside, outside or even near to the listed structure, without a good deal of head-scratching, a lot of deliberation and at no small cost either!
