Is the end of European Law a problem to the construction industry?
There is a lot of talk in the press that the Retained EU Law Bill will come to an end on December 31st 2023, which could be a problem to Health and Safety in our Industry. Surely only for crooks! All construction professionals should be and are aware of the pitfalls of Health and Safety in construction, and go to great lengths the ensure that buildings are designed and constructed as safely as can be reasonably foreseen, the fact that some legislation might disappear should really affect no-one apart from the lawyers who will have a different set of laws to refer-to in their cases moving forward.
Any reduction on bureaucracy has to be a good thing, that is surely one of the reasons that the country voted to leave. There are many other laws which should also be re-considered which were Europe-wide but potentially do not apply to this country (the banana shape law being a good example) and are worthy of reassessment. In particular some of the ecology laws which prevent development throughout the year to protect species that are actually prevalent, but that's another story! If we are now independent, and clearly the recent queue at customs around Europe indicate that we are, then we need a thorough re-assessment of which laws are sensible and relevant to our country in order that we have good baselines to which to work. In the meantime in our industry we will continue to work to the high standards to which in this country we are accustomed.
