Lack of talent and in particular trades-people is going to continue to hinder construction

The expert opinion that the Talent Drought is one of the most significant issues in construction today is no surprise to Architects. Once the tortuous process of navigating the planning system in the current environment is finally overcome and planning permission has been granted, the next stage is to engage with good experienced builders to take the project forward. Trying to find one who is under the age of 55, well-located for the project and not already booked for the rest of the year is becoming almost impossible. If we carry on as we are, in another 20 years a simple domestic project is going to be a long-term affair, with the few remaining builders naming their price.

Homeowners will always have ambition to build, people like new and extended houses and to stamp their own ambitions onto their home. The building industry, albeit physically challenging and stressful can also be invigorating, sociable and is a significantly rewarding environment.
