The article in Dezeen earlier today highlighted Architects Conform and a beautifully considered and detailed project to extend a Victorian terraced house in London, displaying how even the smallest (and quite often most difficult) projects can be elevated with a simple and strong concept and the drive to ensure that this is taken to a resolved conclusion.
This project utilising White Marble and virtually frameless glazing provides an illusion of separate monolithic forms bonded together to form a sculptural extension, and the project below which includes a large overhanging brickwork cantilever, apparently detached from the steel box-frame adjacent, are proof that these type of project involve a great deal of thought and very tricky non-stand detailing, quite often very experimental.
What we really like is that when viewing the image above you can still read the layout of the original terraced house, with the front door, bay window, hall and staircase all readable but totally reinvented into such a contemporary space. A little bit austere, but to quote many a famous predecessor, it's the people that add the colour.
