The Ashes . Day 2 - We take a look at some top Australian Houses

As rain stops play on the second day of the first test at Edgbaston, PAPA takes a look at some of the extraordinary homes down under and what can be created with a great deal of imagination, a stark contrast to the mundane properties which we reviewed yesterday. The first is Pole House by F2 Architecture, an amazingly simple structure, perched on a Pole 40m above the ground, with a single walkway approach. This house has actually been in existence for 36 years and was recently re-built, as you can imagine it takes a battering from the extremes of the location.

The Pole House is available for rent as a holiday destination, commanding from £500 per night upwards, not surprisingly it is not available for parties, you would need to keep your wits about you when negotiating the approach bridge and outside terrace.

Visually it is a mixture between an airport Conning Tower and a traditional seaside pier with fantastic views across the ocean, the challenges for the Architect and contractors would be to get services to the property, to construct it in this location, and to makes sure the detailed is robust enough to weather the conditions. The challenge for the engineer is not just to keep the building up, but to make sure that it does not blow away in the wind, the uplift in this coastal location when storms come in would be significant.

Reading the reviews on the Holiday letting website it seems that the only complaints are very simply down to maintenance rather than design.
